May Rockabilly Challenge #3 - Googie or Cartoon Modern Art

I've actually had my painting done for a while.  I just have neglected to make a post about it.  It's going to be hung up in my mom's bakery/deli - since that's where all of my stuff seems to end up.  Anyway, its based on cartoon modern art.

Since I'm in Alaska, its always fun to get over to Hawaii for a vacation.  TONS of Alaskans go to Hawaii for vacation.  This is kind of poking fun at it.

I'm not sure if anyone is ever going to do any of my challenges, so I'm going to put them on hold.  If you were looking forward to something, just leave me a comment or send me an email and let me know.  The next challenge was going to be a gelatin challenge.

Hot Brodz

I found out that there's an all-girls car club in Fairbanks called Hot Brodz.  I'm thinking about joining.

The Hot Brodz Facebook Link

I was looking at facebook to check them out.  They seem to have new cars.  It makes me a little confused because I'm used to car clubs being for older cars.  I guess we'll have to see how it goes.

What kind of car do I have?  Well I helped my mom restore a 1956 Nash Metropolitan when I was in high school.  Its over at my uncles place right now.  My mom's encouraging me to join the car club and to use the metro.  SO......guess that's my sweet ride.

Now I just need one of my shirts to be embroidered with "Sweet Thang" on the back.  It's a nickname from an old Texan.

This is a Nash Metropolitan.  This isn't mine.  Mine is Teal and White.

Swimsuit, the pattern

I got the latest retro Butterick pattern, which happens to be for a swimsuit!  I picked out blue animal print and some black for trim.  I can't really get to it until I move into my own place.

How 50s is Fairbanks, Alaska?

I don't know how to even really gauge cities on cool-ness.  I'm going to show you some random stuff from around Fairbanks, Alaska.  Is it really a cool rockabilly town?  Not really, so don't be deceived.

There are a lot of leftovers from the 50s.  Alaska wasn't made into a state until 1959, making it the 49th state (Hawaii was quick to follow statehood as the 50th).
Lacey Street Theater

Its now the Ice Museum - blah.
Key Bank, one of the most Googie buildings in town
There is always C&Js Drive-In, our 50s themed carhop
There is a local car club

And we have roller derby here

Grainless Granola

I put my granola pucks into ziploc bags.

Grainless Granola (PALEO)
2 cups Almond Flour
1 cup Flax Seed
¾ cup Chia Seed
1 cup Coconut, shredded
1 cup Walnuts, chopped
¾ cup Fruit Sweet by Wax Orchard **

  1.  Put all of the dry ingredients together and mix.
  2. Add the Fruit Sweet and mix.  You should be able to grab some of the mixture and squeeze it with the result being that it clumps together.
  3. Grease an oversized muffin tin and drop in ¾ cup of a mixture into each pod.  Be sure to press the mixture down so when it bakes you get a puck.
  4. Bake at 350F for 12-17 minutes.
  5.  Once they are golden brown in the center and slightly crisp on the edges, pull them out and let them cool for 10-15 minutes.  Flip over and lightly tap on the pods.  The pucks should fall out pretty easily.

** I haven’t tried this with agave nectar, but I suspect it would work just the same.
